Why emotional intelligence matters

I do some communication coaching for an accounting firm. Before I worked with them, they had already done in-depth emotional intelligence training with every one of their partners. I’m loving this approach, so I asked why did you focus on emotional intelligence? And you know what they said? Because of the research that backs emotional intelligence. Research like this. Emotional intelligence boosts the bottom line performance of your organization and wins bonuses for you. Study after study shows a positive and significant relationship between EI and job performance. Whether you’re studying healthcare workers, accountants, students or office workers, emotional intelligence enhances job performance. In one study of a global food and beverage company, researcher, David McClelland, found that when senior managers had a critical mass of EI capabilities, their divisions outperformed yearly earning goals by 20%. And that resulted in them being awarded nice bonuses. In contrast execs who lacked EI, were rarely rated as outstanding in their reviews. Customer interaction demands emotional intelligence. My husband and I went out to eat one night and we watched as the manager berated a waiter for some mistake he’d made. We left without ordering, and we’ve never been back. We’re not alone. Customers despise emotional outburst, even if it’s not directed at them. Research by Porath and Pearson shows that people are less likely to buy from a company with an employee that is perceived as rude, whether that rudeness is directed at them or at other employees. So the research starts to stack up. But does EQ count as much as IQ or technical skills? In research at an accounting firm, the partners with really strong analytical abilities added 50% more incremental profit than partners with less analytical skill. So that’s not bad. But the partners with high social skills, that’s EI, they added 110% more incremental profit. A lack of emotional intelligence can be a career roadblock for you. The Center for Creative Leadership estimates that 75% of careers are derailed for reasons related to emotional competencies. Building your emotional intelligence is the surest way I know of growing your career’s success. So how strong do you think your EI skills are? As you think about that, know that people tend to overestimate their EI strength. We may not be quite as good at EI as we think we are, but this course is your chance to enhance your emotional quotient and unleash your success.
